My grandfather was very hard of hearing and in a nursing home. One ear was completely deaf while the other was almost non functional.
It was very frightening for our family to see the communication frustrations form the nursing staff as well as from Grandpa.
The nursing staff never came up with any solution to this communication barrier, mostly because Grandpa was very easy going and would aways smile when spoken to and usually answered "yes" to everything.
When he was admitted to the hospital, the nursing staff their realized this communication barrier and began getting the family involved. What a great idea! We were able to help them out and also give them suggestions on how we as a family as difficult as it was communicated with Grandpa.
In the future should I have a communication barrier with a patient like this I realize how important it is to keep the communication open with the patients family.

Very true. Gettting the family involoved is such an important part of a persons stay at the hospital.
What a great idea, that must have been so frustrating for him. This is a good story for all of us to integrate into our own practices.
